UNC will remove plaques at Kenan Stadium honoring Kenan family member who had ties to Wilmington massacre

Kenan Stadium at UNC will no longer be named after William R. Kenan, Sr.

In a letter, UNC Chancellor Carol Folt said the stadium will be named after his son, William Jr., who donated his $95M fortune to his alma mater when he died in 1965.

Before his death, William Jr. made arrangements to name a new stadium after his parents, William Rand Kenan Sr. and Mary Hargrave Kenan.

William Sr. was the commander of a white supremacist paramilitary force, which massacred scores of black residents in Wilmington, on a single day in 1898.

The university will remove the plaques at the stadium that honor William Sr.
