Late touchdown from Douglas lifts Rolesville past No. 25 Knightdale

Knightdale, N.C. — Rolesville took down Northern Athletic Conference foe Knightdale on the road in thrilling fashion on Saturday night, 21-14. Knightdale entered the game ranked No. 25 in the HighSchoolOT Top 25 Football Poll.

Quarterback Noah Douglas scored the game-winning touchdown from 2 yards away with 1:08 left in the game.

The Rams’ Darius Robinson intercepted Knightdale sophomore quarterback Dax Hardy in the end zone with one second remaining to seal the victory.

For much of the game, the Knights were in control. Knightdale took an early lead with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Hardy to senior weapon Josh Scott. The Knights’ 7-0 lead held steady for the entire first half.

On the first drive of the second half, Rolesville got the ball to the 50-yard line before having to punt. On the punt return, Knightdale fumbled and Rolesville recovered the ball on the Knightdale 36-yard line.

Rolesville took advantage of the Knightdale mistake and finished off the drive with a touchdown. Josh Pullen powered the ball in from the 1-yard line. Knightdale blocked the extra point and still led the Rams, 7-6. After the extended drive and score, just 3:55 remained in the third quarter.

Knightdale responded rather quickly. Corey Larkins returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Rolesville 1-yard line.

After Knightdale’s rushing attempts were stood up by the Rolesville defense on the first two downs of the drive, the Knights elected to pass on 3rd and goal at the 5-yard line. Hardy found Scott for a 5-yard touchdown, their second such connection of the night. After the extra point, Knightdale led 14-6.

The teams traded punts from there. With under 10 minutes to go, Douglas scrambled down to the Knightdale 21-yard line to give the Rams a key first down. A handful of plays later, Rolesville scored. The Rams gave the ball to Kingsley Nwachukwu on 3rd and goal from the 13-yard line and the senior back weaved his way through the defense for the touchdown.

Thanks to the missed extra point earlier, Rolesville had to go for two in order to tie Knightdale. The Rams gave the ball to Nwachukwu and he got into the end zone with ease. With 8:12 to go in the game, Rolesville and Knightdale were tied at 14-14.

Knightdale punted on its next possession. Rolesville then turned the ball over on downs.

With just under three minutes left in the game, Knightdale needed to punt once again. The punter dropped the snap and couldn‘t get the kick off. Rolesville took over possession on the Knightdale 26-yard line with 2:42 left in the game. Douglas scored the go-ahead touchdown to take a 21-14 lead with 1:08 left.

In the last minute, Knightdale did a good job of getting into scoring position. The Knights reached the 8-yard line of Rolesville before taking a big sack on second and goal. On the next play, Robinson picked off Hardy.

Rolesville’s win will have ramifications on the Northern Athletic Conference at large. The Rams now sit at 2-0 with Wake Forest next on the docket. Knightdale is now 0-2 after losing on Saturday and to Wake Forest last week. The Knights will travel to No. 22 Heritage next week. The Rams have an inside track to finish in the top half of the conference standings.
