Inmate found dead at Durham County Detention Facility

— Authorities are investigating after an inmate was found dead at the Durham County Detention Facility on Saturday.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office said a detention officer found Jean Carolyn McGirt, 56, unresponsive and began performing CPR.

Emergency officials were unable to resuscitate McGirt and she was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

McGirt’s body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death.

According to court records, McGirt was serving time on charges of failure to appear in court on charges of resisting a public officer, manufacturing and selling a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with the intent to sell and deliver heroin.

Deputies said the State Bureau of Investigation has been notified of the death and results of the death investigation will be submitted to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which is standard protocol.
